went to quiznos today and they have no lunch rush hour anymore. no waiting in line. they actually are paying a guy to hold a sign out front. i wonder if the gas prices are making people bring their lunches to work instead.

I guess one could argue Las Vegas is all tourist driven as well, but notice what they are doing. IMO, you have to have incentives and perhaps that's what Florida lacks as a whole, and maybe Miami in particular.

Sure, it's the downturn in a worldwide economy, but it's not surprising that Miami has been hit especially hard because of it's lack of diversity. It's like a stock portfoilo, you put some money in Gold, some in blue chip stocks, and some in high risk, so if one stock tanks you don't loose everything.

I am wondering if it is not the cost of eating out or they are brown-bagging it to put gas in their tanks.

Mcdonalds was busy today but only saw one homeless in there so things must be bad. I think Quiznoes is pretty pricey for fast food.

I had something new at Quiz the other day and asked if it was a combo. They said yes and when I got the bill, both my chips and a drink were extra. What they called a "combo" was the sandwich and dipping sauce. I.E. Miami marketing.

Las Vegas is tourist-driven, but there's a huge convention/conference component there, which is more or less a business-to-business transaction, rather than pure tourism. They've made it a convenient and fun place to have a meeting. Our convention facilities are a joke in comparison. Tourism in Miami is more about weather and the beaches and cruises and parties.

its also extremely close to LA so there is a massive population within an orlando distance from them. when things get bad they just drop their prices and the middle class in LA come in and snap up deals like crazy and keep them going. been there enough times it got boring.

That's right, so why not Miami? Miami doesn't even have to come up with new ideas, just copy other cities.

I'm guessing, but don't know that our hotels are not 100% full during summer. Push convention business in summer time and make it worth their while to come. Don't give 10% discounts on hotels, give 50% or more.

If Miami is all about the about weather and the beaches and cruises and parties it doesn't take but one hurricane to make those things go away. This all eggs in one basket thing is likely in part what's pushing us to the top of the depressed list. That's the city business planners fault, Miami needs forward thinkers.

Hell, we have a great port here, why not attract more industries that export? Make is easy to do business here, and cheap and people will at least "consider" Miami.

I find Miami has this all or nothing attitude. Pay our price or we don't need any of your dollars. That's a stupid attitude IMO when we need every dollar we can get in the first place and the economy is down across the board and everyone else is lowering prices for non essentials.

You can't expect to compete in a price driven market if your competition is less no matter how good "you" think you are. "Sumtin' bedder thun nuttin"

I don't know, and I'm no economists but there seems to me to be a lack of planning for growth here for whatever reason and it's no surprise the economy here has tanked when we rely predominately on expendable tourists dollars at a time when people are cutting back on spending.

That is EXACTLY it. What this place needs is a great humbling.

Quiznos is actually very good, but it's always empty... not many people go there. So it shouldn't be set as an example of unemployment, not that any one here is saying that - just in case. The same goes for the Ice cream one, I forgot the name though.
