Food In Miami (or maybe a little outside) 1960's (Tamiami: to buy, fence)

I can't find anything on the web about these things. I was hopin' somebody else would remember.

When I was a kid, before 1968, my parents used to take me to a cheap all-you-can-eat place called the Painted Elephant. It had a wishing well and a big painted pachyderm in the parking lot. There was an open area behind a fence and a sign over the gate to the lot. The trees had like xmas lights on them, I think. It may have been outside the city proper or could have been in Broward. It was in a kind of wooded area, maybe Tamiami Trail.

Another thing was a kind of battered hot dog my mom used to buy me and my brother on the Beach. I think it was at or near the pier at Haulover. My mom called them rolly-dogs. They weren't corn dogs. They were battered in a kind of eggy concoction and deep fried. THey looked huge to me, but they may have been normal sized. Anyway, I loved 'em. Later I found out how tight money was then and that my mom actually pinched pennies to get me and my brother those things.

A lot of memories are about food. I'll post more when I think of them. Thanks for any help.
