Hello,
I have never been to Miami and will be moving clear across coast (from Cali) to attend Florida International University Graduate School. I am really looking forward to it, but have no idea about the lay out or the safety of a big city like Miami.

Ideally I want to live by the university, but not in student housing. I need to live somewhat closeby, but I do have a car so that helps. Are there any areas that are close the to the school that is also safe? I am a girl in my twenties who is moving alone, so I need someplace that is safe.

thanks so much!

Address of Florida Int. University is:
Madesto A, Maidique Campus
RDB 2015,
Miami, FL

Lol, I'm going there this Monday (my first day of class, and I'm feeling rather nervous).

I know Fontainebleau houses people like university students for an accessible price... you won't be getting much though, but it's good enough for a person who doesn't have much to carry, like a student.

What is your price range?? That's very important 2 know

Thanks for the advice. I am looking for something below 900.00 dollars. I will probably be working while i attend school. How is the area? Is it safe?

Yeah, it's safe... always be cautious though. The area is far from the swamps so you won't have to worry much about snakes and alligators

There are also many families renting efficiencies (I guess illegal) in the area. I guess it's cheaper than Fointenebleau. You can find them at FIU's noticeboard.

Too bad they destroyed the fontainebleau golf course and it is now an abandoned development full of weeds.

Try looking in the Doral area like others have suggested or in Kendall plenty of college age students there.

I agree that Fontainebleau Park is probably your best bet for living near FIU. There are plenty of apartments in that area, though I don't know what the rents are like. Doral is also not too far away, and it's a better area than Fontainebleau. However, I don't think you'll find anything Doral in your price range.

Also, just FYI. In case you're thinking FIU is surrounded by a hip, university-oriented area, it is not. The areas near the FIU campus are overwhelmingly working-class Hispanic immigrant, and they are also overwhelmingly Spanish-speaking. Just letting you know, so your expectations are in line.
