But, the hidden kicker to the costs of HOA's is windstorm insurance. For my unit, that costs about $250a month out of the nearly $600.
It might sound like a lot of money to spend on HOAs but one has to compare what it costs single family homeowners for windstorm insurance per year. I have heard horror stories about those costs.
Bringing an old but helpful thread back to life. You mention you get a Maintenance guy for part of your HOA fee. Do Condos generally have a Maintenance guy that can fix small things in your owned Condo? What sorts of things?

No, that is not usually the case. The condo maintenance dept. takes care of the property itself, but not things inside a unit. However, depending on your relationship with the management, you might be able to ask if they'll look at, and perhaps repair something for you. However, that would be outside their normal scope of duty. Condo owners are expected to call their own plumbers, electricians, handymen, etc., to handle any issues within their own units.
