The problem with Miami, it is the worst located city in the U.S. for distribution to other American cities, as it has the worst radius to other major metropolitan area. We are not Atlanta and Atlanta is Atlanta because of its location and vice versa for Miami and corrupt governments play a part in both cities.

Absolutely, can't change being in one corner of the country. Still, that does not mean economic doomsday.

I think the future of Miami would rely more on an intellectual scene prospering. Most cities have pockets of educated citizens that foster the growth of the city by not only providing jobs as doctors, lawyers, businessmen, professors etc. They give the city a better reputation to attract more business and allow citizens to cultivate interests in many real world issues.

Miami is still too much a party town and the upper class aristocracy does not care for much beyond money. I just wish there were more bustling research centers, more internationally renown scholars and more zeal for the beautiful things in life beyond what is materialistic to the citizens of Miami...!

Well, as I said before they need to create one of these pockets somewhere, probably near/in Coral Gables that is more cosmopolitan, has places to walk, has places to take kids, has cheaper family oriented housing etc.

I think the city officials will take the easy way out and put in mega casinos though! There's been talk of it before, but I'm not sure how far it got?

Interesting thread. Why not focus on boosting the University of Miami's academic standing?

It's certainly not bad now but improving academic and research programs there could help bring more talent to the area and have spillover effects to the local economy. A couple of major gifts from some wealthy Floridians could help.

One private research university which has boosted its academic standing in recent years is the University of So. California (USC). In 1999, USC was ranked 41st among major U.S. universities by U.S. News & World Report. As of 2011, the school is ranked 23rd by U.S. News & World Report. Major fund raising campaigns (including some huge private donations) helped a lot but so did a focused leadership at the university.

Not bad for a school that used to be derisively called the Univeristy of Spoiled Children. The University of Miami is ranked No. 47 by U.S. News & World Report. I know these rankings are pretty subjective but it DOES help recruit the best and the brighted to your shores.

Yes, you have to find ways to get those that train there to stay. But with the So. Fla. winters that shouldn't be too hard to accomplish.

You don't do your research very well as they are building the Miller School of Medicine off of I-95 and 20th st. They have completed the first of five buildings.
