Like apples mangoes self=pollinate and develop many varieties. Tropical fruits are one reason I have stayed in south Florida. Unfortunately, the groves of fruit trees that used to go from Kendall south have been replaced by residential development and shopping centers. I look forward to the day when some of those developments are bulldozed to make way for more mangoes again.

As far as I know, the Spanish did not settle in south Florida, with the exception of maybe the keys. They stayed in the more desirable northern part of the state.

I have my mother send me a box full from the backyard tree and ship them up to North Carolina. You cant compare those to the stuff you buy at the grocery store.

Mangoes that taste like peaches....apples that taste like grapes...genetic engineering at its finest...

the stuff you buy at the grocery store are mexican or guatemalan and they boil the %%%% out of them to kill any fungus and you are essentially left with something that can only be used as a projectile.

the mangos that taste like pineapple. no genetic engineering. there is just a massive flavor range in mango species and they selectively breed it into the hybrid varieties. apples that taste like grapes? not genetic engineering either. guessing youre talking about grapples which is basically just coating the apple in a ridiculous grape flavor. Cixcell: That mango that I bought the other day that was the size of a coconut was purchased from the Hing Long market. They had 2 varieties. The coconut sized ones which are green/red and a yellow variety which were a lot like an Atualfo, but much larger. The yellow ones were awesome, but the green/red ones were so bland and fibrous as to almost be gross, and I OD'd on just one of those green/red coconut sized ones. Seriously, I was down for the count and had to sleep it off! Weird. Is that common for Mexican mangoes to do that?

That giant mango was ridiculous by the way, because when I sliced a large piece off of one half of it, the damned thing slipped out of my hand and landed flat-face-down on the table with a wet slap! Then when I tried to pull it off of the table it made this sort of suction cup like 'smucking' sound. Oh well, screw it! I ate it just the same.
