You guys sparked my sense of nostalgia, and if you really want to know a whole lot about MB in that era, read Alex Daoud's book Sins of South Beach. Kindle version for $12 and you can read a really good preview for free on Amazon. I'm reading it myself. It's awesome.

Yes, that's an awesome book by Alex Daoud. I read it last year, and felt it was worth every penny of the $22 I paid for it. I never look at city politics the same way again.

Re. south of fifth, I think it was still pretty shady until the mid- 90's. Probably the Portofino in 1996/1997 was what really turned the tide.

Edit: and would love to hear more about your first-hand experiences from the late 80's/early 90's.

There has to be a correlation between high prices and attractive girls....just a hunch.

Yeah, but in Europe there are many clubs where you can go for a much lower price which also includes 1 or 2 beers or drinks. Can't blame the club owners though. You charge as much as the customer is willing to pay. From what I see here I think I would have liked the old Miami even better

The girls were better looking when Miami Beach was cheaper, as long as you didn't stray too far back in time into God's waiting room. I had a friend who lived with his parents in a house near Flamingo park and he always seemed to have a great time. Now the area seems more ghetto with uglier people despite being expensive.

I don't think people realize you can get section 8 housing in Miami Beach just like any other municipality. Just because it's a party city doesn't mean everyone isfinancially well-heeled. In fact I find it odd to see families with strollers all over the beach.
