TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) – The grades are out for Florida’s school districts, and in South Florida, the only districts to get an A report card are Broward and Monroe County. Miami-Dade was rated B, among 23 districts to get that score in results released Monday by the Florida Department of Education.
Florida has already seen individual schools graded for performance on the FCAT exam, but this is the first time the state has graded entire districts on how good a job they are doing, on a whole, educating their students.

The FCAT is typed in English. More than 40% of Miami-Dade students are ESOL students. That test does not reflect the accurate knowledge that Miami students have. If they were able to take the FCAT in Spanish, at least the Mathematics FCAT, those students would have the highest scores on the nation. I have students from South America and the Caribbean in 6th grade that already know how to solve two-step equations and calculate the slope of a straight line but they are ESOL levels 1 or 2, meaning they cannot write/read English.

In Texas students can take state tests in Spanish in elementary school only. Does Florida let students take state tests in Spanish in elementary school?
