We are potentially relocating to Miami in a few months and looking to rent in Brickell, Key Biscayne, or Coral Gables. Honestly, I had never even heard of the concept of negotiating rent until I was reading several threads on various forums about Miami. Is this a common practice? Are rentals listed with the expectation to negotiate the price? How exactly does this work? Thanks for any insight.

Yeah it was a first for me too. Just assume you can offer at least 10-15% less.

Yes, it is negotiable, in Miami or anyplace else in the world. You can just offer a bit less as suggested above, or if you are working through a real-estate agent get their advice. The worst that can happen is they will say no.

Usually if it's a rental complex you can't bargain, but if it's an individual owner or his/her agent, sure, you bet you can.

I have always negotiated rent with my tenants and gave discounts if they kept up the place. In fact I have been for years in a contract with a family renting to own a property I have in West Perrine. I hope they can take over the place by July.
