My husband and I will be in the area for the first time this coming weekend for 3 days. We are flying into FLL. Trying to figure out where to stay now! Very torn on wether to stay in FL or Sobe areas? My husband and I are 29-30 and past the phases of partying and drinking all night. We are just average working people and do not go out to "see and be seen" very much past all that at this stage in life. Don't dress in the finest of clothes, and DEF do not walk around in skimpy bikinis and swim wear! Haha. Maybe I am being presumptious but this is the impression from reading things that I have of the Miami and Sobe areas....? My husband and I are looking for some relaxation and beach time and swimming - pool/ocean. Along with some good food and activities. Things that are important as far as the beach is no obnoxious party types and no crowds of people packed in on the beach.

Based on this which is better for us? We like 4-5 star type places but want to budget some.

Other than things I have read I really have no idea what to expect from either place....any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Either will do, but you'll get more bang for your buck in Ft. Lauderdale.

I went to South Beach last weekend and notice it was beginning to fill with college students on Spring Break. Perhaps Ft. Lauderdale is best. I always preferred the Ft. Lauderale beach proper vs. Miami Beach.

But you must come one night to Mango's Tropical Cafe:

It's been a few years since college but I was thinking that Spring Break was over for most now? Maybe I am wrong? Another concern I have is this - and it might sound cliche' but is Miami a dangerous place for a tourist? As far as the Miami Beach and Sobe areas? Trust me I totally understand to not venture away in Miami but as far as those areas is there anything to worry about? I am a very open minded person - having traveled a lot and seen many things. My husband has traveled a lot as well but he WILL NOT enjoy an area where he would have to look over his back constantly or deal with and rude types? I guess I have a perception that Miami people are rude, mean, each man for himself types and then I have the perception that most people visiting the Sobe areas and Miami beach areas are basically girls in tongs and hard bod guys wanting to be seen. I am just making sure of what is true and not and what to expect....as silly as that might seem!

Yeah you shouldn't have any college kids. Last weekend was Ultra Music Fest which brought in a bunch of young people from around the world, so that's probably what they saw. This friday is a teacher work day, so the kids will be off for a long weekend.

South Beach isn't just about the beach and parties. It also has a ton of great restaurants, shops, and nice bars just to hang out at. Miami isn't that dangerous if you are smart and use big city common sense. Pick pockets do happen, so secure your wallet, stay in lighted areas, don't walk down dark allys, basic stuff. You should be fine in South Beach.

Most of the action on South Beach happens between 5th and 20th street. If you stay with in this area you will be in walking distance to everything. You could stay further north of all this if you want to be in a quieter part of the beach, you will need to take a cab most like to see things. Do you plan on just staying the hole time in South Beach or do you plan on seeing other parts of Miami?

Ft. Lauderdale beach is more like the rest of Florida to put it generally. Ft. Lauderdale is quieter, layed back, a little more low key, a little older crowd and a little cleaner than South Beach. South Beach can be a relaxing trip though, I wouldn't disregard it. You can always stay at the Fountainebleu which is north of South Beach a little ways, less things to do around the hotel, but it may be quieter at the beach. The Loews on South Beach is also nice close to things in South Beach.

Yes we had looked at the fountainebleu also the palms....which is going to have the better beach to relax and have an umbrella and chairs ready and waiting? My husband and I are heavy Irish blood....redish hair, light eyes, light skin....in other words we get lobster red quick!! So sunscreen and umbrellas are.must dos

I would stay in Fort Lauderdale. You can enjoy the same activities for less. Everglades, Casinos, Jungle Queen Boat Tour, Fishing, Sawgrass Mall and Nice Bars on Los Olas. You can always take the 35 minute drive down I95 South and check out South Beach if you get the urge.

Fort Lauderdale Beaches are more laid back and less hectic compared to Miami.

Welcome to South Florida.

Ok, I have been looking at private rentals and hotels on the beach in FL - seems they are just as high as Miami's hotels?! Am I missing something? Can anyone make any suggestions to a nice hotel on the beach around 250 or less per night?
