My roommate & I (we're both girls) are looking to rent an apartment there & we've never lived off campus so I was wondering if it was a safe area because when we drove there today, we drove through some areas that looked sketchy but SW 58th itself seemed fine. Thanks!

it seems like a safe neighborhood.
No sidewalks.
Front landscaping seems to be organized
No iron fence front yards

Things do change on 62nd avenue though.

South of 62nd St to US1 is probably where it gets a little more sketchy. That's a really small area though, so it's kind of hard to define what is sketchy and what isn't (given the east side of 57th Ave north of UM is a pretty nice area). I'm actually looking at renting a place a few blocks from that address, so I do get your anxiety. I will say that getting your car broken into or something is a concern, though (but that goes for a lot of other places that are undoubtedly "nice").

Too close to a bad area in my opinion. I would try for a place just north of SW 56 Street, or on the east side of US 1, in High Pines.

^^^ This as it is too close to the badlands. I believe this is within a 1/2 mile radius where two girls from UM where raped a few years ago.

Most of Miami is like that. Really nice safe area within blocks from a not so nice area. Miami has been voted the worst city in the US for the past 3 years for a reason. Best bet is take women's self defense courses at Anta's Fitness & Self Defense (he specializes in women's self defense) and possibly invest in pepper spray or something else.

MD Police has an interactive crime map CrimeView Community
sort by address, type, dates, etc.

NB: I just searched and it timed out. But have recently been able to access for the data. It does work.

I don't think it's very accurate. Also, many crimes go unreported.

I have a friend who owns and lives in a house near 62 ave. No crime problems despite black neighbors. In fact, those next door are older and always home. I helped them fix their air conditioner once. The bad area starts after SW 64 street, between 57 and 62 ave.
