I'm contemplating moving to the miami area and doing some research. I've looked at the cost of living and it's relatively low compared to new england (where I'm from) with the exception of property taxes. I was wondering if anyone had any information of what the cost of living is for someone renting an apartment in miami.

Depends on where you're looking and what your price range is. Renting here is fairly expensive (not as bad as NY/Boston though), but other things like food/gas aren't necessarily more expensive than other places.

$700 for 1 bedroom/studio could go up to $800 for ideal situation. I have heard little havana has affordable apartments and is near downtown.

I don't think you want to move into Little Havana. Rent here isn't cheap, like you think. The cheap areas are cheap for a reason.

$800 will not be ideal situation, it's about as low as you can go without roommates. The starting point for a desirable place close to downtown is closer to $1k.
