Cubans aren't purely a White/Black population anyway. As a young man growing up in Miami I've seen (Southeren) European looking Cubans, Mestizo loking Cubans, Mulatto looking Cubans (Who won't exactly have a pro-black identity as will blend in as "latin") and obviously straight up Black Cubans.

In Cuba itself I even came across what was referred to as “Blasians”—Black Asians. Not the only exotic mix, either.

It makes sense that there wouldn't be many black Cubans coming to Florida in the 1960s. Those were tough times, especially in the South. I know Miami isn't considered to be the traditional South, but there's still some spill-over from Southern segregation culture.

It's sink or swim in Miami. You need to have lots of money when you arrive, or it will suck. The Cubans with money are the Spanish Cubans, because. . . history. The Spanish started the colony, so they get founder's privilege and all the economic benefits that go along with it.

well of course not...that was Castro's schtick

Castro divided the county along racial lines...convinced the blacks they were the underclass

Black's stayed in Cuba because Castro promised them something...a free rice cooker

...not a lot different than what's going on here now

In Mexico he would be considered light mestizo. He doesn't look Spaniard.

So many Cubans act like all of their ancestors are from Spain. While I have no doubt some of Rubio's ancestors are, I guarantee you some mixing took place when they got to the island.
