I'm originally from VT and attended Ringling School of Art & Design for the past four yrs studying photography and digital imaging. I want to relocate to Miami because Sarasota is much to small and there is not nearly as much work as there would be in Miami in Photography/Art/Fashion/Magazines etc. I would love to relocate there instead of somewhere like, let's say, NYC because it is obviously much closer and is not as overwhelming as Manhatten.

Where do you suggest I look for apartments? I'm hoping to be within somewhat of a walking/driving distance to the rail system and take a train into the city instead of driving. Really not sure if that is reality... any ideas on where to start?

I appreciate all of your input!

First start by taking a look at the job market and see what is available in Miami. The public transportation is not very good around Miami. What I mean by that is you really have to understand the limited options and see if it is even feasible to get to work. It is not like New York, where you can be just about anywhere in the 50 mile radius and expect very frequent transportation 24/7 to the city. There is a rail that serves downtown Miami and the suburbs but it does not extend to Miami Beach. Further up, you have Tri-Rail serving a North - South route along I-95. You have to use a shuttle to actually get to your building if the station is not located nearby. This adds a lot of time to the commute as opposed to a car.

Miami's public transportation is not the best some would even say its non-existent. The Metrorail/Metromover really doesn't serve that many people. If you want to get around Miami you will need a car, for sure. Miami Beach/South Beach in particular is closer to a Manhatten feel in regards to transportation or places that are winthin walking distance from apartmants/condos. I would suggest looking at South Beach, for a young person this is a great place to be.

Just not trying to deter you, but Miami's transportation system is horrible. You pretty much have to have a car in South Florida. Like Doggiebus said, try South Beach, the crowd is younger, but it is very expensive. Try to network, reach out and do some informational interviews with companies you are considering working for. The job market varies by what you are in. South Beach is great, but its really about who you know!
