I would like to know if anyone can help me answer the following question. I would like to purchase a flights from atlanta to Miami on one airline which is scheduled to arrive in at 5:05 in gate H9.. Then I would connect to an international flight out of gate d15 on another airline. Will I need to recheck through security? Should I be able to get my boarding pass in Atlanta for the international flight out of Miami, and what are my chances that I make that international flight leaving at 6:05 pm?
Thank you

I don't really know about the specific gate. It depends on what country you're going to, then you might be able to transit at MIA. About the boarding pass, if you flight itinerary says that you must transit at MIA, then your boarding pass in ATL might be change to the boarding pass to MIA when you board the 2nd flight (international flight.) I believe you will have to use a new boarding pass after arrive at MIA.
I used to fly international, so I remember these steps. You might have to go thru security again, tho.

I think your chances of making this connection are fairly slim, please change it if at all possible.

Whether you can check your luggage in Atlanta all the way through depends on whether the ticket is bought together as one itinerary. That will also determine whether you get the boarding pass for both legs in Atlanta, or whether you have to checkin again in Miami.

Re. security lines, yes, you will have to go through security again at the D concourse, regardless of how your ticket is.

Take a look at the map for Miami airport, e.g.

You will notice gates H9 and D15 are quite far apart, I would guess a good 15 to 20 min walk at least. Add to that MIA is one of the less efficient airports, and I think 2 hours is the minimum time you should plan for, 3 would be quite safe.

I sent you a reply via email but I just saw that it is an international flight on another flight. I do not think you can print your boarding pass online for an international flight. If that is the case one hour is NOT enough. If you are able to check in for an international flight online before leaving ATL I believe it will be enough.

Clearly you are flying Delta then American so they don't corporate much with each other. Call American and ask if you can check in for your international flight at ATL or ask if you can check in online. I'm not sure if either will work. If they say you need to check in at MIA you need to get into MIA with at least 2hrs to spare. If check in is possible BEFORE you flight to MIA to the second flight 1hr should be enough only if the flight arrives on time so it's a risk one hour.

When I flew international this summer, I couldn't print the boarding pass ahead of time. When I called the airline, they said, international flights you can't print the boarding pass ahead of time. It may vary from airline to airline though.

True, but he doesn't need to print the boarding pass online. It can be printed by the checkin agent in Atlanta, so long as the two legs are part of the same itinerary. If he buys the tickets separately (e.g. one from Delta and one from American), then he will not only have to checkin again in Miami, but also collect his bags at the belt, then re-check them at the American counter.

No chance to make it, I'd leave at least 2 hours between connecting international flights, preferably 3. This past week it took my wife 40 minutes from the time the plane landed to get through immigration and customs. The airport website says allow 15 minutes for getting from the south terminal to north terminal, and this is outside security on the moving walkways. You would have to go through security in Concourse D, which in my experience is the most hectic one, not to mention having to get a boarding pass from AA before you go through security.
