SoFla's got absolutely no more space for people. I went to Miami today and I was planning to make it a bit more south to Coral Gables, but the traffic at U.S. 1 (5pm, SUNDAY) was unbearable.

Next I was trying to see if I could make it to the beach so I could ride through the route that passes near the hotels, today was relatively cold and yet I had to make a turn near Palm Island on A1A because the traffic was totally unbearable over there too.

I know Miami is a big city, but considering that there is no more space to expand I am certainly sure today that SoFla is overpopulated.

This weekend was the Coconut Grove Art Festival, SoBe Food & Wine festival, among other special events. What you saw was not a typical Sunday at all.

And it's President's Day weekend which means an (even bigger) influx of tourist.

The boat show's going on too. I think Miami's been too populated since the 80's though.

This weekend we have a lot more people (on top of the snowbirds that are down) in town because of the three big events going on. The OP just picked the busiest weekend of the year to visit.

As others have said, there were major events going on in South Florida. But I think the bigger issue is mass transit. 50% of those people wouldn't need to be in a vehicle if we had proper mass transit in Miami.

Isn't that the truth? Unfortunately, Dade and Broward counties have the Everglades blocking them from expanding outward. So, if they keep building at the rate they are, they're not gong to have any other place to go. I think Palm Beach county will be the next boom area due to more ample land.

That's a GOOD thing (RE: Everglades limiting westward expansion.) Miami needs more density, not sprawl.

I absolutely agree with many points made in this thread. Even though this past weekend had several events happening at two of the biggest tourist locations in Miami, it doesn't take away from the fact that Miami IS overpopulated. As Wild Style pointed out, it wouldn't seem half as bad if Miami, like most other major US cities, had a competent mass transit system.

Perhaps they could focus less on building state-of-the-art stadiums for sports teams nobody cares about and devote the resources to correcting this issue.
