Living in mainland Miami-Dade County would be a nightmare.

Nah, you can do much better than that. You're saying a 2-bedroom rental would be around $3000 per month, but there are a ton of apartments available at $2000-2400 per month in Brickell and South Beach. That translates to $1000-1200 per renter.

Key Biscayne, or that bit just east of Cocoplum in Gables by the Sea (I think the name of the street is Edgewater Drive). Both are basically as safe (and as nice - by far) as it gets anywhere in the land (County). Both are expensive but there are nearly always two or three (or somethin') ads showing apts. for approx. $1800-$2100 (smaller 2bd or bigger 1bd) and for slightly less a smaller 1bd/1ba (or a studio, possibly), in good decent shape. It's no luxury, but generally well kept reasonable older bldgs.

Jupiter is safe. It's only an hour and a half from downtown too. I think Burt Reynolds lives there.

There really isn't a safe place to live in Miami and i'm gonna use my house as a perfect example.

I live in what you can call Central Miami somewhere in the middle of Coral Gables, West Miami and Flagami. I live a few blocks away from Coral Gables mind you. I have been living here since i was born and i am now 30 so this is a 30 year experience for me. Our block was always peaceful and crime free. however over the last few years our neighborhood and block are no longer as safe as they were 5-30 years ago. with the rise of teenagers that have risen in our area we now have these teenagers spray painting our neighbors fence, or home robberies. our home alone has been broken into 2 times within a very quick span and i was always saying how safe our house and block were. Unfortunately i can't say that anymore.

point being is that no matter where you live no matter how safe the area is eventually over the years it will stop being safe.

anyways look for areas such as kendall, cutler bay, central miami those areas tend to have safer areas. the poorer the area the higher chance of crime.
