I am going to Miami next week to look at neighborhoods for our eventual move there in July where I have taken a job working near JMH Downtown. I will need to use the Metrorail to get to work.

I have a wife and one infant son (so schools dont matter), need a two bedroom apartment for $1300 max.

We have a higher tolerance than most for living in slightly "unsafe" neighborhoods (used to it from living in developing countries extensively).

My list so far:

Miami Springs
Doral
Along Miami River
Kendall near Dadeland Mall

Any other suggestions?

If you don't mind walking a bit to the train then I would look at center grove. Maybe somewhere on 27th Avenue. I wouldn't normally suggest that area, but you say you have a "high tolerance" for living in "unsafe" areas, I think it might be doable for you. I would also look at Edgewater.

You thought about using a realtor? You don't have to pay them out here, so it would be no cost to you. I think that would be your best bet.

Thanks for your comment I will check out that area as well.

I will be getting a realtor later, when it is closer to the time we are moving, but the ones I have contacted so far basically said that it is pointless to start looking for specific apartments now since most of the apartments available now will not be available in July, and rather to find the neighborhoods I want to focus on during this trip.

Indeed they are right.

Wish you the best in your move here. Miami really isn't a bad place and if you get in with a decent crowd it can be enjoyable.

"Downtown" Dadeland what its called is a great location if you want to take the Metrorail to work. There's a bunch of apartment complexes near by, shops, restaurants, etc. Just north of the mall is a bunch of apartment complexes. If you drive east or west on Kendall drive there are a bunch of apartment complexes. Even South Miami is a good location, I just don't know what the rents are like in the apartments around there. I wonder what the rent is on those apartments next to the Post Office in South Miami.
