The significance is that it is anti-establishment (aka it scares white people, or atleast makes them uncomfortable). It's the same in Philadelphia where you have a lot of black men wearing muslim get up and growing long beards.

The only thing is in Philly many people are actually Sunni Muslims. And they may tend to keep their beards long but they are also clean and trimmed too. In florida people with dreads tend to keep them looking dirty where as in other places people who wear dreadlocks tend to belong to the afrocentric or artistic crowd. So there is a difference.

Why do you care what the significance is? It's just a way of life in Miami hoods, or all Florida hoods for that matter. Why bother trying to understand it? Dreds and golds don't kill people. I'd be more curious about the significance of shooting people over wearing a different color. (LA, Chicago, etc...)
