Could anyone give me some idea about the public schools in South Miami and Glenvar Heights region?

We are renting in South Miami for now. Our plan was to live here in South Miami for a year or two and then move to somewhere with good schools. But now the owner just informed us he is selling the house and is kind enough to give us the first refusal to buy.

We like the area of South Miami, (not as much as Pinecrest, but it's closer to work). Only concern is about the schools. This house is mapped to South Miami K-8 Center. Does anyone know if its a good school?

Our kids are still very young so high school is not that important yet. Although we might need to think of re sale.

Any feedback is appreciated.

I live in the area, in Glenvar Heights just near Dadeland (and South Miami). The main issue here would be the High School (most of this area - Glenvar Heights & South Miami), which is zoned for South Miami HS (not a good school, definitely). But as the HS is not an issue in your case, it would be fine for you.

And South Miami K-8 is good actually, a properly fine school from what I know. There's also Kenwood K-8 which I know it's nice as well and is zoned for the similarly good neighborhood of East Kendall (just a bit south of here).

Well, overall it's a great neighborhood, very low crime rate, not really much far from stuff (plus there are 3 expressways in the area, and the US-1). Don't have any complaints besides a small issue with people panhandling down in Dadeland itself.

As far as I know it is still a good place to live. There is a semi-ghetto area near Miller and 62 ave and it gets worse as you go towards US-1. Drive out on SW 64 street east from 67 avenue and you will see what I mean. (or use Google earth). That is the only bad area around there so avoid it and you will be fine.

Thank you both for the information! I checked greatschools website but it's always better to hear from people who actually know.

This particular house is very close to South Miami High School. The area looks fine, although I think the area immediately around St Thomas church is nicer. I will see.

The areas is very nice and pretty central but the schools have a pretty bad reputation from what I've heard. But if you like the neighborhood you can send your kids to private school.
