^^ This. We're actually not doing that bad compared with cities which were founded at about the same time, for example, Oklahoma City.

If you have to ask, then the answer is NO. Miami proper is so small. And if you are including all the surrounding areas as "Miami" then it is definitely not world class. The areas of Miami that would make it world class are about equal to the size of a park in a real world class city.

Don't forget murders too. Chicago was the murder capital of the U.S. in 2012 so it also beats Miami in that category.

Several cities have a higher murder rate than Chicago, Miami is one of them. Do you understand what a murder rate is? It's how many murders are committed compared to how many people live in the city and is a better indicator of how violent a city is than the number of murders. Understand?

Simply put you're more likely to be murdered in Miami than in Chicago.

^Then show us the stats. Also what does a murder rate have to do with a city being "world class" either? NYC had one of the highest murder rates in the 1970s-1980s yet nobody at the time would say NYC wasn't "world class".

Look them up yourself, it's easily enough done. If you don't believe me fine, take it or leave it.

I made no claims for murder rate having anything to do with a city's being world class. Truth to tell I'm sick to death of the term---world class this, world class that; the term is used by morons who want to sound like the idiots who yammer on TV.

No way is this thread dying because of some tangent on crime rates. Any more opinions on the original question?

Miami is a world class city inhabited by people that would rather live anywhere else.
Miami is a world class city because everybody knows Miami thanks to Hollywood.
If you ask some eskimo in Greenland, he sure knows about Miami, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, Hawaii..and that's about it.

Why does Miami (and Florida in general) have so many haters on this forum? It's like people have a personal hatred for the city and state.

Miami is definitely a world class city, it IS defined as an Alpha-World City, putting it in the same category as New York City or London. While Miami is obviously smaller than those cities, it's still pretty big compared to most other places. And it's a central trade and economic backbone to the world, especially Latin America. All of these traits make it an Alpha-World, World Class City.

Miami is not a small resort city like say Honolulu, like many people on this forum tend to think. The reality is that if Miami were to do disappear, the entire world economy would suffer just as if NYC, London, or Hong Kong were to disappear too. It's World Class, despite the hate that it receives on here. Miami is still constantly growing and is visited by people from all over the world every day, some for vacation, others for business.
