Hi all,

As someone with a fairly significant mold allergy I'm wondering if mold contamination problems are common in South Florida?

Thanks!

Not a problem in air-conditioned spaces.

Mold contamination of homes isn't a huge problem. It does occur yes, mold grows anywhere there is water and during rainy season Mid May through November, mold grows where water collects.

I don't think mold contamination is a huge problem as long as you run your AC. Any house that has a leak can get mold but that is not limited to south FL.

Air conditioning helps but mold can grow right inside the evaporator, or in the air conditioning closet if there is a leak. My homes never have mold because they are all metal, glass and concrete and mold can only grow on materials that rot. Drywall is a huge problem if wet so that is another reason why I never use it. The main reason is that I am allergic to drywall due to the paper u sed and the process that gypsum is prepared for drywall.

Unfortunately I sold my Miami-Dade county rental properties to buy farmland and my former home is rented to a good friend in Key Largo.

I know this is an old post, but mold/mildew can grow on ANYTHING! How can someone that lives in Florida not know this??? At least once a year we have to clean black mildew off our vinyl siding, and we had someone come in yesterday to clean mold off the ceiling inside our Florida room, which is metal. I suspect we also have some inside our mobile home air registers, which are completely metal. It gets on glass, it will grow on anyplace where there is moisture, condensation, etc. It loves concrete driveways, extension cords, etc. Where DO you live Rick?

True, running Air-Conditioning will stop mold growth. This I found out (the hard way)after my closet walls became covered with blueish mold. This spring we left the windows open when it was cool. But as soon as the humidity rose above 70% we were overcome by the blue fuzz. I used borax and vinegar on the first pass. On the second pass, I used a mildew stain remover from Home Depot then wiped it dry. We shut the window and cranked down the A/C to get the R/H below 50%. The smell is gone and the closet is back to normal. I strongly urge running the a/c or dehumidifier when needed to avoid mildew and mold problems indoors.
