Agree with the others, South Beach. If you want to get a flavor for the area, there are several tours you can take, including a really cheap one that you can download right to your phone.

The family and I got on the hop on hop off double decker tour bus at the downtown central depot. It has two routes the beach route and the city route. Get there early in the AM and one of the 1st sops on the city route is Viscaya so we spent a couple hours there. Next place we got off was Coconut Grove and walked around for an hour same in Coral Gables. Then we got off at the SW 8th steet stop where there is a bunch of ethnic restaurants and had the best Ox tail and Chicken diners we ever ate. Theres a bunch of drive by sites in between that are cool. Then we get back to the tour depot in the afternoon and got on the beach route and didn't get off anywhere just riding the tour bus. But when we got back to the depot we got in the car and went to spend the evening at SOBE. We could have just jumped off the tour bus at SoBe if you are taking cabs rather than go back to the depot

I grew up in Miami normally wouldn't do a tour us but we were down there for a cruise and had just that one day and it actually worked out perfect for us. My wife got to see a few places she had heard a lot about and the kids 9 and 10 YO ran from early in he morning till late at night. I think the kids enjoyed Viscaya more tan we did

Look for activities if you have a free weekend. I went to the Coconut Grove Arts Festival today. First time ever and it was very interesting. Although I think they should rename it The Cocount Grove Arts and Arepa & Food Kiosk Festival! To say that food stands, particularly arepas, was in abudance would be an understatement.

One day is not enough to experience the full flavor of Miami. You can stay around the overpriced tourist areas, but the only way to experience the real flavor is to rent a car and go through the suburbs miles from the coastlines. For only one day hitting Miami Beach and any festivals or shows you might like is a good compromise.
