I've come up with this simple method to rate communities: Communities with litter, homelessness, lack of bike facilities, etc are crappy. Communities with people walking or biking, green and safe, having outdoor cafes are happy. Gated communities are none of the above: neither happy nor crappy.

Me? I live in a crappy community. It's generally safe but traffic is the main threat. We must tame traffic before a community can be rated happy. They are doing something around here they may call "beautification" but I fear it's more about corruption. This is totally depressing. Oh, we have a population of thousands of feral cats, so crap is all over the place. Good place for the fat cats. The birds are gone.

Mine WAS happy commuting from South Beach (Venetian Island/Purdy Ave area) to Doral in 30 min, but now with the new traffic pattern change on the 836 going west its not so much happy anymore.

That doesn't refer to the community itself but what's going on?

One thing definitely crappy in that area is both parks at each end of Venetian where the homeless have set up camp. When you go in a car you may not notice how crappy things are.

Happiness is a state of mind. You can live in a crappy place and still be happy and viceversa. Maybe it's about comfort instead of happy, but again, you can have certain level of comfort and still be unhappy.

Yep, you may indeed live in a totalitarian system or a prison and be happy.

On the other hand, it doesn't cost much to make a community happy.

The reality is that most are crappy and the ones that look happy are only happy on the outside, superficially or happy in a fake way.

Right, it's only a facade that only the enlightened residents of this populous city know. For example, the Metro Mover that travels among the downtown highrises as if by magic, it's all crappy. The homeless benefit the most from it.

Is there people outside the cage? Is there people out at night? Are there cafes? Am I asking too much?

You know, I was browsing recently some prosperity statistics from around the world, and one question they ask is if people is afraid to walk at night. Most Americans say "no," but nobody walks anyway. I love the night. I'll love to ride a bike at night and, say, get to Lincoln Rd. That's a happy place, right?
