I think its pretty interesting that there a new shift in referring to the local way of speaking as a dialect rather than an accent. One key take away is that, "The distinction is technical as well as political: Immigrants have accents, natives have dialects; an accent is something you try to lose, a dialect is something you use to define your cultural and geographical heritage."

I don't see anything here. The Miami accent or dialect is just like any other, for example, boston. The boston accent or dialect is influenced by the Irish. That doesn't mean that only the Irish or people with Irish decent have that accent/dialect. The Miami accent/dialect is influenced by Spanish, but that doesn't mean that only Spanish speakers or people with a Spanish language background have the accent/dialect. I have family members who have the accent and we aren't Latin or anything of that nature, we are white. It's new too so that's why most don't have it yet. And whoever thinks it's just a dade thing is completely incorrect and most likely one of those ignorant dade dislikers (for no logical reason), it's the entire Miami area, dade, broward and palm beach. I know people in dade, broward and palm beach who that accent.

I don't know why some people here insist on being ignorant and making ignorant and pathetic comments and acts. The Miami is just like any other metro area, and I would say its one of the best. If you thought it was just a retirement beach place then just accept that you were. Yes, there are places where it's retirement, beach and both, but it's not exclusively that. If you just want beach, for example, then you are welcome to it, but don't bash Miami just because it's a city and functions like one. It's 2014, stop already.

Personally, I like accents/dialects, it makes you more unique.
