I have heard all about the crime in Miami 'proper"...what about Miami Beach?

Mainly hang out around Washington Ave, Ocean Drive & Collins Ave (around South Beach).

Are there any areas that one should watch out for...have lived in several large cities...so I am street smart.

THANKS!

That area is a very touristy/party area and is very centralized. The large clubs/hotels are in that area and police presence is high during the weekend and at night. During the day it's very safe to take go shopping on collins where all the boutiques and hotels are.

Collins has everything from trendy boutiques to touristy shops. Don't sweat it, that are is not high-crime at all. Just use your big city instincts and you'll be fine.

Miami is a high crime area...but the touristy areas are well protected so day and night you should be fine. If you venture out to the rest of Miami...and see the REAL Miami...your opinion of Miami will likely change...its not so nice off the tourist drag...most places who's economoy is based heavily on tourism usually has a great tourism strip and scary, desolate, poor everything else...and in general..this holds true for Miami.
