I had some friends from Jacksonville down in South Florida on vacation staying in the Fort Lauderdale area. The other night they traveled from their hotel to Miami Marlins Stadium. I just don't get why there is no exit off of the 17th Avenue from the Dolphin Expressway, instead you exit the 12th Avenue, travel south to NW 7th street, take a right then head west to Marlins Park.

So why is there no exit off the 17th Avenue exit, seems like it would make it easier ?

Bad planning. They also managed to put it too far from mass transit...and on top of that they did not include enough parking!

That stadium was built 3-4 years ago. The highway was built decades ago. Yes there was the Orange Bowl there before which was there way before the highway. I never had issues getting to games.

They correctly assumed low attendance and light traffic.

The exit off of 12th Avenue was planned so people can get to the Medical complex facilities of Jackson Memorial as well as the County Courthouse nearby (both located North of the highway)

The exit off of 27th Avenue has much more traffic because its one of the few roads that goes from SW Miami all the way to the northern most tip of Broward County (University Drive)

Miami has definitely outgrown its planned infrastructure. Traffic is terrible anywhere you go and its probably this fact that contributes to the poor attendance. Nobody wants to deal with horrendous traffic driving home, to then deal with it again on the way to the game, and once again leaving the stadium.
We are also a very bad sports town. There are too many transplants from all over the globe that either haven't embraced the sport (much less the team) or if they do adopt the local franchises, they will go visit when they are playing an opponent from their original place of origin

I consider myself a casual baseball fan and I have yet to go to the new stadium because its location really makes it difficult and unattractive for everyone who moved North to Broward County just to escape the crazy over-crowdedness of Miami-Dade. It would take me 45-HR to get there WITHOUT traffic. If you think I would go there during peak rush hour -- No Thanks!

yeah, I went to a game for the first time this week and one of the front office people was near me...the lack of public transportation directly to the stadium (unlike in NY or CHI, for example) has a dramatic impact upon attendance according to him. Very nice ballpark though.
