Dolphins abandoning tax-relief plan in favor of event payments

The Miami Dolphins plan to abandon their push for tax relief in favor of asking Miami-Dade to pay the team for recruiting Super Bowl and other major events to a renovated Sun Life Stadium, county Mayor Carlos Gimenez confirmed Tuesday.

“It’s kind of similar to what we do when we try to bring companies” to Miami-Dade, Gimenez said. “You perform, you get something.”

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross had been negotiating with Miami-Dade, the school system and Miami Gardens to have the county take over ownership of the stadium, which would free the team of a yearly property-tax bill worth nearly $4 million. The Dolphins are Miami Gardens’ top taxpayer, and the team faced resistance from both the city’s mayor and the superintendent of the county school system, which receives about $1 million yearly in Sun Life taxes.

--------------------------------
First, the Dolphins need MDC to pay for part of the stadium. When that doesn't work "Oh, don't worry, we can pay for the stadium!"

Second, the Dolphins want MDC to take over the stadium so they get out of property taxes, yet the Dolphins retain almost all revenue on events taking place at the stadium. When that doesn't work we get...

"We don't need you to pay for part of the stadium upgrades or take it over, you just have to pay us to bring in big shows"

When will the BILLIONAIRE stop asking for welfare checks???

Gimenez is getting cozier and cozier with these deals every day. His support behind almost every one of them is telling. Now he's going to bat for UM with the soccer stadium deal, giving Ross even more leverage. UM is a PRIVATE university that can fend for itself.

It's time everyone sends Stephen Ross and Carlos Gimenez an e-mail saying we're tired of sports welfare! When they make millions upon millions of dollars, yet thousands of Miami Dade residents lack simple things like reliable bus service to get to and from work, you know there's a problem.

If they only get money if the Super Bowl actually came to Miami it really is not a bad deal. You can't deny that the Supe Bowl brings in money to the city. IMO Broward County should chip in the bill too. Both counties benefit.

Miami Dolphins are asking for the same treatment that the Miami Heat and Florida Marlins. They will pay for the renovations to the stadium out of pocket, and in return, Miami Dade and Miami Gardens pays the Dolphins in bringing more events to the area (Superbowls, playoff games, marquee soccer match-ups, huge concerts like the one Jayz and Justin Timerlake had, etc).

The money that the city and county will bring in for hotels from tourists, revenue from restaurants, etc will be huge if they can get the more big events to come to Miami. And they are only coming to Miami if the stadium gets renovated.

Even if he is a billionaire, you can't expect Steve Ross to dish out a huge sum of money and get no return on his investment. After all, he didn't become so wealthy by giving out charities.

Oh, also a side note:

FAU is hosting the first annual Boca Raton Bowl next year. Could you imagine the money that South Florida will bring in with a new ronvated stadium for the orange bowl, plus West Palm Beach hosting their own bowl? Tourist will stay longer to see both games while enjoying two newer stadiums.

I truly hate greedy people. Miami is the epitome of greed in these days. This mutha f_cka is a BILLIONAIRE trying to get money off of hard working people. This idiot is just wasting time. He could have paid for the Stadium improvements and racked up who knows how much money, because the NFL loves Miami for the super bowl. No other city has hosted it more times. Just the dummy is too cheap to just pay for the improvements.

1) It's his stadium.

2) It's his business.

3) Of course he didn't become wealthy by giving all his money to charity, but this is the taxpayers of Miami giving HIM charity money.

4) As with all honest business, if it doesn't make fiscal sense, you don't do it. You don't look at somebody else and figure out how you can bilk them out of money to make it worthwhile.

Why pay for everything yourself when you can get other people to do it for you, and still collect a big fat check!

Only a moron with no threat of foresight would patch a sorry venue like that.

Jerry Jones initially planned to patch Texas Stadium in the late '90s. That tired venue was roughly the same age as the Robbie Bowl is today. Then Jones came to his senses and created a visionary stadium that will be applauded for decades.
