http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/ddl/teendriv.html

"Operator’s License (16 and 17 year old) - To earn an operator’s license, you must be at least 16 years old AND have held a learner’s license for at least one year without any traffic convictions."

So, basically, if you haven't held a Learner's License for a full year without any traffic convictions, then you're kind of stuck until you turn 18 at which point you can take all required tests to obtain your Operator's/Driver's License.

Hope this helps!

Hello, I'm 17 going on 18 on october 2nd, and I recieved my permit when i was 15 and upgraded to provisinal liscese when I turned 16 after having it for a few months it had got suspended for runaway charges but only for the rest of the year...when I turn 17 I tried to renew it but they said they needed a pink slip from the school I was attending in order to renew ... but I had dropped out later on for being pregnant and I'm afraid they will not renew it because I'm not attening school....what can i do?.. I am due in August and I need tranportation to work and doctor's appointments for the baby and so forth... Is it possible?..I mean i never recieved a ticket or anything of that sort since I recieved my permit/license.

You do not need anything from your school, however, you may need your parent to go and give consent. When I took my son for his learner's permit I had to consent to it, but he did not need anything from his school.

In FL you need to have a learner's permit for a year before you have a license.

im sorry but i have to disagree with all the other posters here ....

my friend dropped out in 10th grade because of medical conditions and he could not recieve his learners liscense because he had not been in school for a year..( you need to be currently enrolled in school and have been for atleast for atleast 2 years or something like that) ... so i think you have to wait till you are 18 and go straight for the drivers liscense

Here are the requirements for drivers licenses in FL.

Florida Drivers License

Nowhere does it say you have to be currently enrolled in school, although minors need parental consent.

My kids are homeschooled. When my son was ready to take the GED at 16 so he could get his high school diploma to start college we had to go the Miami Dade Public School office to formally withdraw (drop out). You can't take the GED if you're enrolled in school. They told me that my son wouldn't be able to get a license until he got his GED or registered back into the school system. It's an incentive to stay in school.
This is from the Florida Dept of Education:
"Florida law (Section 1003.27, Florida Statutes) requires each school principal or designee to notify the district school board of each minor student accumulating 15 unexcused absences in a period of 90 calendar days or who drop out of school. The district school superintendent must provide the names and identifying information of these students to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV). DHSMV may not issue a driver license or learner permit, or may suspend the driving privileges of any reported student until the student has satisfied regular school attendance requirements as outlined in Section 322.091, Florida Statutes."
