"Infrastructure to support the tower would be paid for in part by $2 million in state funds, allocated in the 2014-2015 budget for public transportation improvements." Since when is an observation tower a public transportation improvement???? This is even worse than road improvements which at least you can argue make traffic flow smoother for the busses... Imagine if the money had been taken from MDX, all hell would break loose!

That is very small, that is like 1/2 of 1 percent, considering 430 million dollar project.

Not the point; point is why are they siphoning off transportation funds for this? Reason?

Given this, I do not want to hear a single word from the gov and its advocates regarding the lack of funds for public transportation improvements.

Makes me wonder how many other non-transportation projects transportation money goes, not only here, but across the US.

Then you hear people/gov officials on the news, in forums, etc, cry how the gas tax needs to be raised because there is not enough money to maintain the transportation infrastructure.

If the state wants to help a little on a tourist attraction, i'm fine with it. It makes sense.

There is no need to use the public transportation budget as petty cash.

Maybe it is the vertical busses that takes one to the top of the observatory or the Bungie Cord one can utilize hehe

Actually the percentage is way larger than that because that's the only work being done so far. They have plenty of time to get more public money.

And it is worst than it looks:

the State of Florida is giving (public transportation) money to a private developer for a project (unrelated to transportation) that has not even all the city permits nor the voters approval. All because the a federal agency (FAA) approval requests the project to start before June 12.

The county seems to be the only government level absent in this taxpayer's money party.

Crosswalks are cheap (they're just paint and signs!!!), as are bus shelters. Busses cost much less than $2M, and Transit has less busses than when the half penny tax was approved. Give me $2M, and I can give you realtime GPS tracking of busses in a month or two. At least roadway projects can potentially lead to less congestion making the busses more reliable, but a tourist observation tower does NOTHING for actual transit riders.
