Does anyone know if you can make out some of the high rise towers of Miami 50 miles across the Gulf Stream in Bimini, most likely on a clear, cool, crisp winter day (and most likely from the roof of a building)?

We go to Bimini on our boat quite often and no you can't passed say five miles out. Now if the hair pin building ever get constructed maybe 20 miles out you can see that.

Always enjoy these discussions because I grew up in the Chicago area and you could see the skyline there from some unbelievable distances under perfect conditions. Here's a photo from Warren Dunes State Park in southern Michigan, which is about 50 miles across the lake from downtown Chicago (skyline is small but clearly visible):

I also remember seeing the skyline from Illinois Beach State Park in Zion, which is about 40 miles north.

Chicago has five skyscrapers that top 1,000 feet, led by the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower at 1,451 feet. I think Miami's tallest is the Four Seasons Hotel at something like 789 feet, so the long-distance viewing isn't quite as good. That 1,000-foot tower might be visible from a long distance if it's built.

I may be six years late to reply to this thread, but I think you CAN see Miami from Bimini. I have never been to Bimini, but I checked on Google Earth, and it appears to render the Miami skyline from Bimini, and not just one building. Pretty much all of the Downtown Miami skyline, and even the skylines of Miami Beach, Sunny Isles Beach, Hallandale Beach, and Hollywood, are visible. Google Earth, though, doesn't take into account weather conditions, which may play a role. However, this Google Earth screenshot proves that it's very likely that you can see Miami from Bimini. The Miami skyline is circled in the screenshot.

No you can't. Fished there many times back when we could get away with selling fish and keeping over our limits.

It is 48 miles from Hollywood. I fished offshore for a living for over 35 years and about 20 miles is the max to see buildings out of Clearwater FL. The curve of the planet is too much at that many miles. Even the twin towers can't be seen that far.

I would agree that at sea level you couldnt make much out but i'm thinking if you get up on a roof of a hotel top in Bimini a couple floors up maybe something would be visible. At the very least at night i'm sure the sky is lit up.

No, not even close. As others said, once you are just 20 miles out or so, you can't see it anymore. You definitely can't see it FROM Bimini. Heck, I own an airplane, and even taking off and turning towards Miami, you can't see Miami from Bimini.
