The mayor of Fort Lauderdale has spoken scornfully of environmental initiatives. I don't expect a "green" push in this city until after next year, when he leaves office.

The transit situation is infuriating. Why would anyone be stupid enough to buy an overpriced high rise in the suburbs instead of a ground level home? You get all the disadvantages of suburban as well as city life. Why is so much spent on traffic circles, road widening and goofy beautification projects when the area has no real transit system. The true measure of a city is being able to access all of its facilities without personal transportation. If you need a car, you are in the suburbs or in the country. I will probably always need a car as I intend to live in a rural area, there's just too many amenities there that cities cannot provide. I already know how to be less dependant and in the right location could be self-sufficient.

At the very least, south Florida should be reusing its waste water to irrigate parks, right-of-ways and schools.

It has also been my experience that the county does not want any green innovation. I made the first "green roof" as a kid on the back room of the house, and Team Metro was recently trying to fine my parents because they thought it was unsafe. Oh yes and it had been hit by a Ficus during Andrew with no damage. They even fined my parents 250.00 for having a composting system I designed for them, with help from UF. Monroe county was giving me a break on garbage fees for the same system because it cut my garbage to 1/2 bag a week. They even fussed about the 8 barrells of rainwater we saved in closed plastic barrells and fined 500.00 only to drop the fines when I showed the supervisor the brochure that DERM gave me on rainwater storage. Environmentalists are not welcome in Miami-Dade county
