There are any number of criteria used when compiling such lists, so you would have to investigate the methodology for this one or that one, but Miami is usually in the middle of the pack among them, so really no surprise here either.

You have to understand Miami in the context of Florida and the United States, the global economy, and its main assets: heat, water, and US administration (and no state income tax or estate taxes).

Especially since the 1870s, Florida and Miami have been largely shaped by people bringing already accumulated wealth with them, rather than being a center of income generation and wealth creation - they ain't no New York or California, for example, yet they are connected through administration, transportation (starting with the railroads) and capital markets, and even more so nowadays through information technology and telecommunications. And yes, Virginia, some of that does trickle down. Beautiful.

Moreover, little by little Florida and Miami are developing centers of learning and wealth creation. It is very early days.

Well, then, from that perspective, maybe it is surprising!

All the best, Miami!

From page 30 of the report:

How we measure the world

Our analysis confirms the most important global cities to the world’s wealthy.

Our measure includes an assessment of unique city-level UHNWI population
counts, provided by WealthInsight; in addition, our Attitudes Survey contributes
rankings covering the importance of cities for their business links,
economic activity and lifestyle offer. In short, these are the cities where the
wealthy congregate, work, invest, are educated and spend their leisure time.
Future forecasts for wealth populations and judgements of the changing
influence of cities from our Attitudes Survey underpin our forecast for the top
10 cities in 2025.

Miami is in the US, taxes, financial center, near tax havens, safety and connectivity...and weather....plus more luxurious accomodations, marinas...

But London number one? I guess they are taking into account "the city", stock markets...if not, I don't quite understand.

London and NY have been taking the number 1 and 2 spots interchangeably for a while, but London has become the most international city in the world in the past few years. Lots of the UHNWIs from Russia, Asia and Africa choose London as their base, both for their money as well as real estate.
