Hello,
We are relocating for my husbands job to Miami in May 2008 from Orlando, we are wanting to rent a house or townhouse in a safe area, but we have never been to Miami except for vacation which didnt give us good idea of where the people live.

We are a MIDDLE class, white family with 3 kids, 1 is autistic, so schools that are good is a plus also. Although we don't mind diversity, where would we best fit in Miami to meet other families like us??

We enjoy areas with lots of family minded activities like little league, mommy & me classes and things like that right in the neighborhood or area. Also, in addition, is Homestead good area and how far out of Miami is it. We are looking for anywhere North or South of the Miami area.

We are coming down within the next few weeks and wanted to know which areas to look to get ideas for where to live and it would be great to have a few areas in mind rather than just driving the whole area.
Thank you for your input!!

Homestead is about an hour plus from Miami and is a depressed semi-rural area with sky high crime and bad schools. Don't head south from Miami, head north, and head west. You would probably be best off looking into the Cooper City area of Broward County. Do you currently live in Oviedo or Lake Mary? If you do, it's basically the same thing, and similar commute into downtown Miami (to downtown Orlando). Zero in on communities along the I-75 corridor in southwest Broward County, particularly west Pembroke Pines, west Miramar, Davie, Cooper City and Weston. It's kind of like Seminole County except it's S. Florida. The Pinecrest area in Dade County is a little closer to downtown Miami, and also has decent schools and charming neighborhoods (Something you won't find in the 75 corridor communities), but is significantly more expensive. Looking at your criteria, I would say Cooper City is your number one choice.

Homestead is kind of a bizarre area. I would not recommend it, although Tallrick has stated that the western county-side is very nice (I have not been the country part myself).

You might want to go up to Plantation instead, which is in Broward county.

Crappy schools and too far north. Although Central Park Elem. is supposed to be very good.

CORAL GABLES would be my first, and only choice. It might be a tad more pricey but worth every penny for the upscale environment, an excellent police and fire department and fine city services. The Coral Gables Youth Center is a hub of activity for people of all ages. Go look at Venetian Pool. Visit Miracle Mile. Get a map of Coral Gables and ENJOY!

Take a look in the northeastern part of Miami... Miami shores, El Portal and Biscayne. On the southeastern side take a look at Brickell Ave. If you need additional rental information I can have someone from my office in Ft. Lauderdale look up some stuff to start you off with. Let me know if you need it.

Miami Shores, El POrtal and Biscayne PArk do NOT have good schools... Lived in the Shores for 2 years and I wasn't impressed at all.

You will like Weston, it's a great community, safe, "A" schools, many parks, etc

Did no one notice in the original post where he stressed that he was middle class? Even capitalized "middle."

Honeslty, I don't know if my definition of middle class is skewed, but I'm thinking Coral Gables will be waaaaay out of his price range. (It sure is for me) Other than that, you are correct, it is a great place.
