We definitely felt the hostility in Miami when we lived there from 2000-2004. One time my husband tried to order something from a fast food restaurant and the cashier refused to speak to him in English. He was told that he should speak Spanish since he was in Miami! Totally ridiculous. Every single company I applied to there required or strongly preferred that the applicant speak Spanish. I always applied anyway and it never stopped me from getting a good job. It might be a different situation these days, though. I loved the beaches but I'm so glad we're out of that city! It was a very frustrating experience to say the least.

Nope, sorry. It's still in the United States, where the first language is still English.

What people speak at home has nothing to do with what language is dominate in Miami. Fact is almost every single thing throughout Miami and the county is in English, making English by far the dominate language in Miami and the county.

It is Latin influenced, but it is not Latin culture. You could say it may yet another variation of Latin culture since Latin culture itself is not homogeneous. Or, you could say it is US culture since it is, in fact in the US, and the US has influences from numerous cultures in varying degrees.

Hostile treatment? No. But refusing to speak English? Yes. If you want to hear English, you better stay in Fort Lauderdale and North. Such a shame how the language in Miami is mainly Spanish. smdh.

The flip side, at a large store on Calle 8, home improvement and DIY materials, an elder gentleman approached Customer Service to ask, in Spanish about advise on what to do about a misplaced Store's Credit Card (he cut in line as the persons were already dealing with other customers) and the counter persons addressed him in English. No compromise. So I offered to translate, but no, the elder gentleman just walked away and started to talk to anyone with an orange shirt - several, just customers that happened to be wearing orange. Whom, properly tried to help him, in English.

Why is it a shame? Miami is a city where 59% of it's population is foreign born and Spanish is the predominant language amongst it's residents.

Sorry that you are ashamed of a city that has over 70+ languages spoken by Miami-Dade students on any given day in their schools.

If you want to hear mono-lingual English in the US there is the 99% rest of America that may satiate you.
