Well, they're welcome to come after me. It's been 6 years since I had to change the plates that I had, and I still own them. They're in my office right now. Never got a letter or any reference about it whatsoever, and I doubt I will. If this was a concern, the people at the DMV should have said something to me about it when I had to switch plates. They said nothing, and certainly did not ask for the plates, despite the fact that I had them with me at the transaction.

Realistically, FL has much bigger things to spend money on, than chasing down every single license plate owner who moved in and out of the state, or who has to change plates for some reason, and begging for the old plate back. That's millions of people a year. I don't think they're that worried about it, and if I were a resident expecting to be in this situation, I wouldn't worry about it either, unless they directly take the time to ask for them back - they had multiple opportunities to ask for mine, and they never did.

Wow! I can’t believe how many people think they’re under no obligation to return license plates! Once upon a time in the 1960’s you got new ones all of the time & kept old ones, but I’d guess for 40 yrs or there about, every state in the country requires the old ones turned in, if not renewed, not just Florida!

I don't return any of mine because Florida is cheap and closed so many DMVs. If you return them to a private tag office (like Beach Auto Tag in Miami Beach), you have to pay $5 per plate. I have 5 plates, I won't be spending $25 to give them back.

The state doesn't care, you don't get letters or anything.

When I lived in Mexico, I had a Virginia driver's license. They cancelled my license because I hadn't returned the plates. So, yes, you should return those plates. Even if Florida doesn't enforce those laws today... they might change their minds eventually.

To continue on this. I moved to New Jersey and changed everything over from Florida to New Jersey in February 2018. I forgot to send my Florida plates back. Now I have just received a letter from NJMVC stating that my driving privilege are going to be suspended. Why? Thats a good question.

I thought when you change everything over, license, registration, plates ect... that the state that you have transferred from gets notified. The only thing that I can think of why this is happening is because I did not send back the florida plates. The other thing that is odd; is that the letter from the njmvc has both my florida and new jersey license numbers on it.
