We are a young (27 & 28) year old couple looking to relocate to South Florida. My husband is a holistic massage therapist and also works with lizards, frogs and bugs (oh my!) in the pet trade world. I'm finishing my degree in Sociology/Psychology and also do wellness coaching. We love our dogs, hippie/bohemian culture, natural living (Whole Foods and yoga all the way), and all on a lower end budget. We would rather work smarter not harder, and aren't into a super fast paced culture...but don't mind a visit to an amazing foodie restaurant or local concert every once in awhile. With all that said, we know VERY little about South Florida, while having visited the Pensacola/Orlando/Jacksonville areas on numerous occasions. I've asked a few friends from FL and they all say we are meant for South FL. I know Miami is a big world, so I wanted to ask your opinions on cities we could thrive in and enjoy. We love 5-points type areas, and don't mind the hipster vibe either Mostly looking for a down to earth city, animal lovers, and holistically minded with health. Is that too much to ask?? We are looking around the $150,000 mark for a home, possibly a condo. I would love to be around 30 minutes-an hour from the ocean but that's not a must.

I don't know if you gonna find what you looking for in Miami, Maybe Broward county might be easier.

It's pretty much gonna be an expensive area similar to Winter Park in Orlando. I guess maybe a condo around the beach will do but I don't know the prices of those condos these days. Forget the Western suburbs. They are either too expensive or not artsy enough for your what you are looking for.

Oh boy.

Miami is an expensive city, if you don't have a secure well paying job within a week of moving here you probably won't make it since jobs here are sparse.

150k will get you into the poorer neighborhoods of South Florida but nowhere else. Safe neighborhoods start at twice that.

And if you aren't into fast paced culture, prepare to be irritated to hell and back thanks to our amazing traffic problem. And yes, you'll most likely need a car if your job and home aren't near the Metro Rail.

I can honestly tell you that Miami is NOT what you're looking for.
You should post this in the Florida section and see if someone can recommend a place with what you're looking for. I would say Daytona, based on your needs, but there's probably better places to live that others can recommend.

I don't feel that the Miami area is for you, either. Nothing Bohemian here! Expensive to live here with relatively low paying jobs. There might not be enough demand for your skills. Try states further north or the northwestern states, Oregon, Washington, etc.

Total bull. You can get a condo or studio in very nice and decent areas, even on the water in Miami for under $150k.

OP, allow me to be blunt and honest with you.
Miami is the most unhippie/unbohemian city I've ever been to. There is quite literally NO hippie scene here, like out in California/Oregon... It's not a place known for it's progressive politics, green-living, etc... There's really no cute little alternative towns with holistic shops, organic eating, counter-culture styles.

Also, Miami is very fast-paced and hectic. Miami culture is definitely an "all about me" culture. The culture IMO is one of clones. . Desinger (often tacky) clothes, big cars, flashy stuff, shopping, dining out, and just generally living beyond your means is the norm. Not that everyone does that, but there's a pervasive culture of that. ... the person living in the hood with a cheap honda civic, only to be wearing a Hermes belt and a loius Vuitton hand-bag..

Anyway, perhaps towns north like Deerfield or Delray Bch might have a bit more of what you're looking for, but overall, there's not much of a hippe/granola culture in south FL at all.

haha u should practically be banned for the wrong information you give. We're trying to help this person here...not lie to them and tell them Miami has this and that when it actually doesn't.

Do a quick search on zillow for a home by the water for $150K..... Nothing. The best one is going to do for that price is a 800 foot 2 bedroom apartment in some dumpy apartment building from 1965 on west Flagler.... no, thanks.

Are you kidding? You should be banned for not having a clue. There is tons and tons of places, including 1/1 on South Beach for $150k or less. Lots of places on the water, too. Here is a few. This isn't complicated. There are places in Wynwood also, which I wouldn't live but this person might like. Nice try, though. Would you like to apologize?
