Have yet to spend a Halloween in Miami, always in Europe then. Maybe I'll fly back just for the day, it kind of intrigues me now that you keep bringing it up.

Europe has really bitten this halloween bug, when my parents came to this country they didn't know what Halloween *was* now the people dress up, light fireworks, it's crazy.

I remember back when I lived in SoCal, we always went to Las Vegas for Halloween.

Several live bands, people decked out in costumes (though fine if you are not, as I do not wear one but go to people watch), and the entire mall is packed with people from Washington to Alton.

the other things I notice, or do not notice:

I seemingly do not run into many (or as many) homeless people in Miami Beach....I am sure they exist, unless SoBe has employed the ex police chief of Philadelphia?....in San Diego, I cannot help but notice dozens on a daily basis to the point it is as bad as Market Street in SF. I cannot recall the last time I saw a homeless person in Sunset Harbour, SoFi, Lincoln Road Mall, Brickell Avenue, Gables/Grove, etc. etc.

I seemingly do not run into the hipsters with 8 month grown out, unmanicured beards and skinny jeans and tats (and some with gauges--ears cut out).....are they all confined to Wynwood?.....I rarely run into them in SoBe and never see them in Brickell/downtown. Every third 20-30 something in SD fits my above description...they had better have a masters from Johns Hopkins or Phd from Stanford if they were to represent my company (if they would even be hired at all)....resto and bar industry is one thing; professional (law, medicine, business/tech is another).

Disagree about the homeless, not sure how you didn't notice them. Just walk Lincoln at night, and just about every closed storefront will have several sleeping. Walk down Washington during the day - and besides them being everywhere, the street often smells of them too. To be frank, I wish our police would do more about the homeless problem. Some of them are violent and psychotic, during Art Basel last December one was shot to death on Alton/15th outside of Razzledazzle, after robbing them and a bank. I do know that MBPD occasionally do sweeps where some of the worst offenders are taken off the island and plunked onto the mainland, but they come back.

I'll keep an eye out next time....Washington does seem to have its scuzzy section.

You tend to see them isolated and scattered about, especially in front of closed store fronts, not necessarily in large gatherings or "colonies" like in other cities or even on the mainland in Miami (e.g., SW/SE 1ST/2ND ST, old Miami Arena area, south edge of Wynwood). Fortunately, there is really no "skid row" in Miami Beach. The MBPD is proactive at approaching homeless and offering help if they want it. I haven't heard of them rounding them up and dumping them on the mainland, although when they do ask for help, it is true they will likely be taken to a shelter on the mainland.

Funny even in rural Labelle or Clewiston you see less homeless than in Miami Beach. I have never seen any homeless people in Labelle. You expect homeless and the mentally ill in places where tourists congregate. By the way I have seen homeless in downtown and even at Brickell. You never see homeless in the single family home areas of Miami Beach though.

So that's from where they come. I usually give them 2.25 to take the bus to go back to South Beach
