I am a professional who was raised in the tropics, i have been researching relocation to Miami for about a year.

I have visited Miami a few times and am comfortable with the social and financial situations the city demands.

I stayed with a girlfriend in little Havana for a month and i really enjoyed it.

My situation is this: i have and plan to expand a large tropical plant and animal collection so i need at least 1/2 acre way out in the rural area.

expecting well water and solar electricity.

this forum seems to be the best place to get good data on the city, i have crossed referenced you guys many times.

.....so tell me, when and where should i buy in south Florida???

[i plan to work for Miami metro zoo while running a small production farm]

.........many thanks

Your best bet is to buy land in Florida City or Homestead to the South or futher West from the Zoo. Far Southern/Southwestern MiamiDade is about the only place to find land for an okay price. However, you will not find the vibe to be anything like where your friend lives in Little Havana. In a way, these areas can end up feeling more like North Florida or Georgia than South Florida.

West Homestead or Farther south in Florida City. As for it feeling like Georgia, no. I'd say more like Mexico.

You will pay 100,000 an acre and up so I hope that you are very rich! Land is up to 500% overpriced.

Have you been to the rural South lately? Mexican laborers have influenced the culture of farming areas and small towns across the South.

The Redlands would be perfect for you. Close to the zoo and the zoning for offbeat animals wouldn't be an issue. Rural feel, although in the last 5 years some subdivisions have managed to creep their way in.

Ditto to the above poster. (fauve)

The Redlands is very nice.

We lived there for awhile...I miss it... (not the commute, though)
It was peaceful, and as close to Country Living as could be possible in this over populated county.

Wish you great luck and success in your relocation.

Don't forget about the pockets of drained swamp land northwest of Okeechobee road to the Broward county line. They are also wildly overpriced though.
