Not very. At least not my friends who while conversational and fluent (many were raised by parents who only speak Spanish) openly admit they dont speak grammatically correct and cannot write at all. But they are at a mininum first generation born in the US. Of dozens, I have one friend - an attorney who is confident in her ability to both speak and write in Spanish and as a result has a great practice in international business throughout the Caribbean, Mexico and Central and South America. Or so she tells me.

Most Hispanics speak informal, uneducated Spanish. When they have to attend inernational clients from Latin America it is almost as if they didn't speak Spanish at all. The jargon isn't there, except for antiquated cubanisms and slang...and the Hispanics who actually speak well are the ones who have moved from abroad recently. Miami born Hispanics' Spanish is the same as that of Hispanics everywhere else....and English is their main language.

I just feel bad for people visiting Miami from Spain. They must be appalled about what has happened to their beautiful language.

Is the OP asking how well Hispanics know a Spanish dialect or the Spanish spoken in Spain?

Probably no different from what the British must think when they hear the way English is spoken in this country.

It has to do with how much you were exposed to Spanish throughout your life. Most of us have no formal Spanish education, but we speak Spanish in different degrees of wellness.
