Hey all,

I need to have utilities in my name for proof of address with banks and others (e.g., State I'm leaving) to prove my residency in Florida. However - I notice that many rentals I'm considering include things like cable, internet, water, etc. I suppose that leaves electric in my name (which likely suffices). However, I'm wondering if any of the included utilities go in the renters name as well - or because they are included they do not.

How do you all prove residency besides electric? Landline?

I moved here in December, have FPL (electricity) and Webpass in my name and am renting a condo. I also switched banks, had address on company paystubs changed, kept the Post Office change of address notification to FL, moved all my bank and brokerage accounts to a FL address, and have my auto lease and auto insurance under FL. I have heard stories from others that my last state, CA, might try to come after me to collect taxes but my CA CPA says above will suffice...will find out in about a year.

DirecTV is in owners name.

Good point re insurance. I'll have auto and renters in addition to electric and a lease (and likely a webpass/sunpass). Plus drivers license. That's got to cover CA - even without cable/gas/water. Thanks for the reminder about insurance.

Even free cable/internet will have service in your name. Especially if they provide digital boxes so that if you upgrade your channels or order PPV, they have an account to bill it to. So even if you never order anything, your bill will be $0 and it will be in your name which counts as a 2nd utility.

DirecTV is in my owners name, as they wanted a full 12 month commitment from me to bring over a new box. My current lease is only 6 months...furthermore, I try to avoid minimum commits, if possible--particularly if it involves AT&T or one of their subsidiaries due to their absolute horrible customer service.
