Looking into moving to Miami or Las Vegas due to the crazy level the cost-of-living has reached here in NYC. Any advice, especially from people in my field, would be greatly appreciated.

FL has a reputation for ridiculously low wages in this field but I read that the problem is more concentrated in the central region of the state. Is the pay competitive in Miami?

Misc. info.: I'm 47, single, registered in X-Ray, CT, & MRI (graduated in 2002), one large dog (Anatolian Shepherd).

Thanks.

Other than the fact that I've been X-rayed, CT &PETScanned to death over the past six months, I have no knowledge of the field and its pay scales. However, as someone who up until four years ago maintained dual residency in LV & Miami and would live six months of the year in each locale, I can tell you that the cost of living in LV is ridiculously cheap. And that pertains to more than just housing. We spent a great deal less on groceries, dining out, entertainment, insurance, and property taxes in LV than we did/do in Miami. The only things we spent more on in LV were car registrations (it's based on the value of the car each year); utilities, especially water; and sales tax.

Oh, and one other thing you might appreciate since you're in the healthcare field. There's an old joke in LV that goes like this:

Q: Where does one go in LV for good medical care?

A: McCarran Int'l Airport

I'll also add that finding housing for someone with a large dog can also be a challenge. When you're looking at rents, be sure to look at the rates and locations for something that is also pet-friendly.

You might also want to look at the west coast of Florida, which has a lot higher percentage of retirees and more reasonable costs of living.
