Didn't expect this one to be gone...

Macy's in downtown Miami will be closing | Miami Herald

Quote:
On Thursday, Macy’s announced that its downtown Miami location, at 22 East Flagler Street, will close as part of a restructuring that the department store chain began in 2016.

The 72,000-square-foot store will begin clearance sales on Monday, which are expected to be completed by mid-March, Macy’s said. A final closing date had not yet been announced.

About time, should have closed years ago from the looks of it. No point in the store when they have all the others in the area, which are in better more attractive areas than downtown.

The store wasn't handled properly, looks like crap. It'll suck to not have a Macy's downtown, most Major Cities have one in the center.

I just walked by there today. That part of downtown is so rundown. A lot of cheap jewelers, dirty sidewalks, and homeless people.

Exactly my thoughts. It's rare not to find Macy's in city center in most of the major cities. Well, at least there is one in South Beach...

horrible customer service too, weird hours. hated going to that one when I lived downtown.

Good Riddance!

South Beach one will be gone too, they are actively looking for someone to buy out their remaining years on their land lease. Historic board won't let them 'remodel' the front like an H&M would like to...we'll see what happens!

Flagler Street really needs a complete re-imagining like Fremont Street, Las Vagas--a non pretentious party/entertainment hangout scene every night with some local talent and sidewalk cafes. Kind of like the bandstand at Bayside but more extensive, I bet a lot of people would come out for that (perhaps mostly tourists at first). With the ongoing "upscale-ification" of Lincoln Road, there is potential. The key is it can't survive as a car focused main street where people feel they need to park right in front to visit one specific place--downtown Miami has outgrown that and there is no longer space for everyone to park right in front. Even valet parking causes traffic backups in this town. So kick the cars out of Flagler, and NE and SE 1st ST can carry plenty of traffic volume. Plenty of nearby garages so it's quite possible for people to park within walking distance in the evenings. Of course, fixing and expanding the Metrorail wouldn't hurt either!

I have lived in Miami this time for almost 25 years and have been downtown about 5 times. Three were for jury duty. I had no idea any business still existed there. I used to work in downtown back in the early 80's when the motto was "don't let the sun set on you" That's when the shooting started.

That specific part of downtown is badly in need of a makeover but other areas (some similar, some better) do have some good dining options--NIU Kitchen, Alloy Bistro, Meraki, Farfalle, Fratelli Milano, Zest, Jar & Fork, Arson--along with Whole Foods and, coming soon, a new movie theatre.
