I visited one of my friend's today and her backyard faces the highway. The air seemed very polluted to me even with the trees planted and all. Anyone else notice this? Why would you purchase a house right next to the highway anyway? I asked her and she said because it was a bargain when she purchased it but what about those new pricey houses on the turnpike that face it?

Sorry, never noticed that, but it could be true.

I used to have a condo overlooking Flagler and couldn't have anything out on my balcony because within a few days it'd be covered in soot. No outdoor furniture, nothing. I got tired of cleaning it so eventually I ended up with an empty balcony. Most of the balconies were empty there I guess for the same reason. When we bought a new place, I made sure it wasn't near any major roadways for that reason, and also the traffic noise.

I have noticed an increase in pollution near my parents home since Miami-Dade county has added 4 more 4-way stops and a circle of danger to the neighborhood. Each new stop sign increases pollution, and more continue to be added every day.

I think that it has relationships to the weather( hot like Miami and California).
I am moving to a house near a highway(600 ft from it) in Toronto.
I can hear the sound but not the pollution.

Indeed you won't hear the pollution nright away.
Wait for 5 to 10 years then you'll hear the noise of your lungs.

I lived pretty close to the highway right off of S. Miami Drive and didnt notice the pollution at all, but maybe that was due to being right near the water?

I think the lesson here is don't live near a highway if you can avoid it
