This is the part of Miami they don't show in the tourist brochures. Very, very sad situation for so many vulnerable people on the streets.

Quote:
Katrina became hooked on heroin after she lost custody of her baby boy. Alice was lit on fire by another woman working the streets. Trish became addicted to pills while trying to treat her chronic pain.

These are just three of the women featured in American photographer Bruce Gilden's new devastating collection 'Only God Can Judge Me'.

Gilden, who is part of the famous photo cooperative Magnum Photos, made a name for himself in the photography world with his close-up portraits of the many characters that roam the streets of New York City.

But it was when he began taking pictures outside of the US, that Gilden found inspiration - and a personal connection - for his new portrait collection of Miami prostitutes.

Miami is a city like any other city. Truely sad but no different than any other major city.

Should be legalized so both workers and “customers” are better protected. Make pimping illegal.

I could not help feeling extremely depressed and empathetic after looking at those pictures.
What horrible things must a person have experienced, wether out of their own bad choices or just bad luck to get to that state?
Life sucks......

I'm not sure why this thread is Miami specific considering prostitution & drug addiction is prevalent throughout the world.

They call it the oldest profession in the world for a reason.

I find it slightly annoying when people habitually come to the Miami forum whining and complaining about personal problems and masquerade them as social problems that are really personal problems common to humans the world over since year one, and blame them on "Miami" as if it were a unique place apart from its geographical position/climate on the continental USA, akin to people who blame social and personal problems on "ideologies" instead of looking at themselves in a mirror as humans responsible for themselves.

Seems to works more or less acceptably in Netherlands and Nevada.

It would appear that most prostitutes and drug addicts suffer from mental health issues, in many cases stemming from child abuse.

These are difficult problems to solve.

Dade County and private groups in Dade County do run facilities for minor children of parents who are drug addicts and/or incarcerated and/or deceased.

I know a family who mentored one such child and he seems to have transitioned to adulthood successfully.

You'd be surprised that many developed countries around the world have some form of legalized prostitution, even Canada. There are usually just regulations that pimping isn't allowed and you can't buy a billboard to advertise it. Routine safety checks, being legal so reports of abuse can be reported to the police without fear, giving power to the individual and not the pimp, tax revenue, guidelines, oversight, etc.
