Hi,

does anyone live at Red Road Commons near the University of Miami? Is it a nice place to live? Is this a safe area?

Thank you,
Mauro

Are you a college student? Will greatly determine the answer to this question.

I believe Red Road Commons is specifically student housing, so I assume you are a foreign university student coming to UM.

It is generally a safe area. It is also a highly commercial area, abutting a gas station, and you can walk to UM and a lot of good shopping, dining and entertainment options across US-1 into downtown South Miami. There are also a metro station, hospitals and a US post office within walking distance.

I don't know personally anyone who lives in Red Road Commons, but I imagine that the complex itself, of relatively new construction, also has at least some amenities, including a fitness center, but apparently no pool.

The website even seems to have a chat feature, so you can discuss details with a person who supposedly has inside information.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck!

Hi,

thank you for your messages. Yes, I'm starting a 5-year PhD. Do you think it would dangerous to be there in an apartment on the ground floor?

Thank you for your help!

I understand your concern: the complex is open to the public streets, and in any case there are no guarantees.

Chances are that the windows are sealed and made of hurricane-proof glass, which should also be bullet-proof against a relatively small firearm.

As for door and building security, you really have to check with people who have inside information and experience.

Generally speaking, it is not a neighborhood of Miami-Dade County prone to violent crime, police presence is relatively heavy, especially around campus I imagine, and I have not heard of any particularly violent crimes in relation to UM housing over the past several years.

But that doesn't mean that there haven't been any: check local police records.

Good Luck!

Hi,

thank you for taking time to answer my questions. I was told this by the community manager: "Yes, this part of Miami is pretty safe, especially since we are so close to the campus, it's generally very quiet.
You are on the ground floor but to enter every building residents use a resident key fob that unlocks the main doors.
Your porch has impact windows and a lock with latch. We also have police officers who patrol the community overnight".

I guess it should be okay...

It's a safe area. If you are concerned about living on the ground floor, can't you ask for the 2nd or 3rd floor?

The area to your east is VERY safe. Coral Gables police responds very fast. It’s one of the best places to live. There is a small area west about 10 mins that’s not so great. But red road commons is on campus property. And overall all around is a family neighborhood. They also have their own campus police which takes a lot of pride in safety. I would not be concerned at all living here. And as someone mentioned the quality of the building is additionally very safe.
