A new friend of mine, sent me a letter, and in it he made the following statement: "I told you all of this from the jump." Does anyone know what it means? And is this a Southern phrase? I have never in my life heard anyone use it. Have you? Thank you,

I never heard it either, but sounds a lot like "from the get-go", which means "from the very beginning", supposedly of African-American origin and common over the past 20 years or so.

Words come out of human mouths and a such are living organisms who move and change all the time, new expressions are born and existing words and expressions change meaning in accordance with who's speaking in changing and often unique contexts.

So don't be surprised, and don't be surprised if any two humans can't agree on what "is" means.

Talking sasie123

I spoke to my friend over the telephone, last night, and he has an indistinguishable accent, more like European, so I was rather taken by surprise, when he told me that he lives in Miami, and is Hispanic, so I spoke to him in Spanish, and he hesitated, then told me that he does not speak Spanish. I have never heard any one using that phrase, especially, if they are Hispanic. I can understand not speaking the language, because many of Spanish heritage, born in the USA, do not speak the language. But, when I pressed him, he stated, "I told you all this from the jump." I asked him what "jump" means. He stated, "from the start."

Somehow I get the feeling that he is not being honest with me.....!!!!

It’s a basketball reference, from the opening jump ball that starts the game. “The Bobcats fell behind from the jump and never really had a chance to win the game”. It is a Southernism to some extent, akin to “I’m fixen’ to...”, means I’m getting ready to...

The basketball origin makes a lot of sense.
