Undoubtedly, my 14 year old son would LOVE for me to come home with some 15 year old freshman in HS who would sit in his BEDROOM with him all night while his father and I go out. If THAT'S not asking for trouble I don't know what trouble is.

I have a really hard time with these "helicopter" parents hovering over their children until they are 21.

Now I wish I had a babysitter when I was 15.

I honestly think no LATER than 13. I'm not a latch key advocate but I do believe kids should learn how to be responsible for themselves alone at a young age and the sooner they start, the better. It's up to the parent to decide when exactly is right but I think no later than 13 is acceptable.

It depends on the kids but i would imagine a large majority of kids are ready in that age range.

The age to babysit other children in Florida is legally age 16 years, however until age 18 they still cannot legally babysit more than 3 children at a time etc..So you must still use common sense about it.. Children under 8yrs old may not be left alone under any circumstances and their babysitter must be 16 or older. For children over 8 yrs and up may only be left with a babysitter between 13 and 15 yrs of age for brief periods of time . (and not overnight) So basically your boys age 13 and 14 can be latchkey kids but they can not babysit others.

What is your source? It is my understanding that there is no minimum age in FL.

funny, cos i lived in germany and was horrified how young some of the kids were that were left at home alone...seems this changes from country to country...incidentally my kids are 12 and 14, and we leave them for a evening.. where we go locally, take a mobile, nice neighbours next door where they know they can go to if worried etc, a good video for them and usually a pizza, rules like do not open the door, go to bed at a certain time (which they stick to!!!) and no swimming in the pool....never ever had a problem yet....

I literally grew up home alone, I stayed mostly inside my room with the doors locked - I was very afraid of the rest of the house. My sisters would follow my mom everywhere. I had a nanny once, she would play dead sometimes, which scared me, but we played together after that... it was fun.

I think it's safe to leave a child home alone, but you have to teach them basics of fire and electricity... that should be enough to keep your child and house in good standing.

I was walking home from school and would stay home alone since I was 8. But that was in NYC. Things are completely different over there and the times were different in the late 80's to early 90's when I was growing up.
