"Miami-Dade commissioners approved a $14 million contract Tuesday for detailed designs of a four-mile monorail system between Genting’s Miami property and South Beach, the first step toward building a transit system sought for decades and a decision Beach leaders criticized as too hasty...

The agreement marks the first time Miami-Dade will actually be paying toward a transit project over the MacArthur Causeway, after decades of effort pursuing a rail line that used to be called Baylink."

Fourteen million dollars for a design of a four mile rail? Seriously?

Yeah, sounds like the umpmillionth case of local government officials giving away property taxpayers' money to cronies under the guise of "consultants".

That's the first thing I thought of when I read the word "designs" and most likely they won't get an inch further once the $14 million is transferred to the "consultants'" bank accounts.

That's the only reality I see here until proven otherwise with facts on the ground.

Not holding my breath.

But I would hold my breath if I had to ride in a tiny enclosed space with a bunch of random strangers.

Mass transit sounds cute and quaint in a late 1800s/early 1900s sort of way, but technology is making it obsolete.

What technology is making it obsolete?

It's eight million for the design, which the county would then own if they choose not to go forward with the monorail. The design work apparently could also be useful if the country decides to extend the Metromover system rather than going forward with the monorail project. If the county does choose to not sign a final agreement to build the monorail, then they would owe a termination fee of an additional $6 million. That's how they get to $14 million. But to reiterate, the design work itself is $8 million over 18 months, not $14 million.
