Is this possible? I have found some affordable apartments for rent in the crossings area but it does not seem walkable and I would prefer to be closer to the water. Is my budget unrealistic?

Try Downtown Dadeland zip code 33156. https://www.apartments.com/downtown-...mi-fl/j6994t5/

It's walkable to some restaurants, Dadeland Mall, and just south of Coral Gables. Underground garage parking, washer/dryer, internet, basic cable is included. Some buildings have studios that are very small, I don't know if that's what you get for the stated lowest rent of $1750. My electric bill for a 2 bed/2 bath averages $35-70 a month, even in the warmer months with the A/C running constantly.

Downtown Dadeland is right next door to Dadeland South Metro Station too if you wanted to get to Coral Gables that way.

Good luck!

Look into Brickell but you'll probably have to raise rent budget

That's a good area, however be prepared for a 45-60 minute drive to Coral Gables depending on where you are in the Hammocks. If you are working remotely, no problem.

Downtown dadeland looks great and an easy commute. Is coconut grove a similar price point to brickwell?

Coconut Grove is a great area too, google zip code 33133. It's going to be more expensive than Dadeland but might be an easier commute. I would have looked to buy there but my family is in Cutler Bay and I didn't want the extra drive when going to see them. I also considered Brickell when moving here, but it was also too far from Cutler Bay for me.

I hope someone else gives you pointers, I'm a relative newcomer to Miami, I've only been here 6 years.

Scratch the Hammocks off your list immediately.

Nothing is an "easy" commute in Miami. But why commute at all when you can live basically across the street from Coral Gables and walk to all that the CBD has to offer?

Another close-in option would be to rent a "casita" from a homeowner in Coral Gate, Shenandoah, or Silver Bluff. These are usually stand-alone 1br/1ba structures with a full kitchen on the same property as a single-family house, but with a separate entrance. Some are these are legal, many are not (meaning the property is not zoned for multi-family.) Rents for these usually run from $1k-1.5k.
